Google Buzz’s Holiday Bug and How To Fix It

January 07, 2011

During the holiday’s this year users started to see posts show up in their inbox stating that the post has been updated, once the user opened the Buzz post there was no new comment or update. What’s happening here is that the Google Buzz algorithm thought that a good comment was spam and marked it as such. The bug caused the inaccurately marked comment to falsely show up on the post and caused what I call a ghost update.

Once the main crew at Google Buzz came back from holiday vacation the bug was fixed by the next days. Now all posts and comments will function as normal starting from January 4th, 2011 and on.

But what about posts that happened before January 4th? Well, these posts still may have the bug, but I have the fix for you.

How to Fix the Google Buzz Holiday Bug:

  1. View the post that is having the issue within Google Buzz – you must own the post in order to make the changes
  2. Click on the drop down arrow next to ‘Comment’ – this drop down is the small blue arrow in the top right of each post
  3. Choose “Remove some comments” – This will give you new red options after each comment on your post (Delete and Report Spam)
  4. Once you have found the comment that is causing the issue on the post, delete it – Deleting the comment will get the post back to normal.
  5. Click on the button ‘Done moderating comments’ – This will save your changes

I hope you won’t have to use this, but if you do, I hope it helps.

We are still missing comments on Buzz. In fact, the bugs are getting out of control. Many users who have with Buzz since Feb.2010 are leaving. It’s beginning to look like Google has abandoned Buzz.

I have been on Buzz since Day one and though I noticed some issues, I don’t think I was hit as hard (or I didn’t care as much) as some of the others. I really hope that Google comes in and helps the users fix some of these issues that we have been having lately.
