Educational TV In 2010? Where Did It Go?

January 24, 2011

When I was a kid there was a lot of TV shows which were focused on making learning fun for kids, such as; Bill Nye The Science Guy, Mr. Rogers, School House Rock, The Magic School Bus, Under The Umbrella Tree, Lamb chop, Barney, Dumbo’s Magic Circus, Winnie The Pooh (The one where people were dressed up in costumes).

But what do kids have now? Dora The Explorer, Hanna Montana, the Jonas Brothers? Do you see the difference? there are a lot less educational shows and more reality/party shows and I wish that this would change.

Why Educational Shows Are Important:

Some of my best memories that I had as a kid watching TV was sitting down and watching Bill Nye show me how a potato can be used to create energy or watching The Magic School Bus show how our body fights infections. The best thing about these shows is that it made me want to get out and do experiments.

These were great and they taught me a lot as a kid and they are things that I use now as an adult. I wish that the type of TV shows would change so that our kids and future kids would grow up wanting to learn.

Have you noticed a change in TV shows over the past 5, 10 or even 20 years? Let me know what you think and if there are some quality TV shows out there that compare with the likes of Bill Nye or The Magic School Bus.

    You are so right. The discovery channel, history channel and National Geo used to have some great educational programming. Now it is mostly garbage like Ice Road Truckers or Swamp People. I am sure PBS still has some good programs, but on a limited schedule.

    I think that the discovery channels still have some great shows, but they aren’t really tailored to kids. PBS is ok, but I think that most people (including myself), don’t really watch it all that much.

    @Andrew
    The discovery channels shows are crap tailored to dumb people who do not wish to improve their knowledge. Not those such as children who love and live for new DISCOVERY. PBS is awesome and does not get viewers because they are “PBS”..Change their name to something like ‘EDU Unlimited’ or strip DISCOVERY from the now fraudulent, false advertisers and give it to PBS and all would be right again.
